Book of Dead Review: Free Spins and Expanding Symbols
Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead is a Play’n GO slot with an Egyptian exploration theme and a special expanding-symbol feature. This guide describes the original game. Other titles in the Dead series, including GO Collect editions, have separate mechanics and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Base Game and Symbol Roles
The original uses a five-reel, three-row display. Ordinary line awards depend on the active paylines and paytable. The book or tomb symbol has both wild and scatter roles: substitution and feature triggering are different functions, even when represented by the same picture.
Where line selection is available, distinguish the line stake from the total stake. Activating more lines changes coverage and may change the round cost; it is not necessary to “maintain mathematical integrity.” Check the version’s help screen for which lines and stake settings apply.
Free Spins and the Special Symbol
Play’n GO’s original-game walkthrough describes a three-scatter trigger awarding ten free spins. Before the feature begins, a regular symbol is selected for the expanding-symbol function. During the feature, it expands when the required conditions allow additional awards on active lines; it does not automatically expand into a paying result every time it appears.
Qualifying special-symbol reels do not have to be adjacent. The number needed still depends on the selected symbol’s paytable. Regular wins and special expansion are evaluated according to the rules rather than assuming every combination of scattered symbols pays. The publisher also describes an additional ten spins when the scatter trigger repeats during the feature.
RTP, Maximum Awards and Earlier Losses
Confirm the configured RTP and payout cap in the exact version. A headline percentage copied from another service may not apply. Maximum awards also need a clear basis: line stake, total stake and cash value are not the same unit.
A high-volatility description does not mean that patience is rewarded with an eventual large win. Losing spins do not make a feature due. The special-symbol selection and reel results cannot be predicted from the theme, a previous session or a short demo.
Optional Gamble Features
If the version offers a separate gamble after an award, it puts some or all of that award at risk. Check the available choices, probabilities, payout treatment and limits in its rules. The feature is not a method for protecting a balance or recovering earlier losses.
Scope for Canadian Readers
The feature explanation is based on Play’n GO’s Book of Dead walkthrough and game guide, checked on 30 September 2026. It does not establish availability or identical settings across Canadian provinces. See Egyptian-themed slots, slot odds and review criteria for the wider context.
