Specific Triples and Any Triple: Sic Bo Probabilities
A specific triple requires one named three-of-a-kind result; Any Triple covers all six matching sets. With fair independent dice, those events have different probabilities. Neither is insurance against all losses, and their expected returns depend on the stated payout.
The Mechanics of the Specific Triple
A Specific Triple bet is exactly what it sounds like: you are wagering that the three dice will show one particular number. For example, you might place your chips on the “Triple 4” box. To win this bet, the result must be exactly 4-4-4. If the dice show 4-4-5 or even a triple of another value like 3-3-3, your bet is lost.
A specified triple has exactly one winning ordered result out of 216, not six. For example, 4-4-4 is one result. Its probability is 1/216, approximately 0.463%. A payout such as 180:1 is an example paytable value, not a universal rate across Canadian services.
Understanding the Any Triple Bet
The Any Triple bet covers a broader event. Instead of picking one specific number, you are betting that any set of three matching numbers will appear (1-1-1, 2-2-2, 3-3-3, 4-4-4, 5-5-5, or 6-6-6).
If the dice land on any of these six combinations, you win. Because your coverage of the triple outcomes is six times greater than a specific triple bet, the payout is significantly lower, for example 30:1 on the paytable used below. Its probability is 6/216 = 1/36, approximately 2.778%.
Payouts and House Edge Comparison
The following calculations assume fair independent dice, profit odds as stated and return of the stake on a win. House edge is one minus expected total return per unit staked.
- Specific Triple: With a 180:1 payout, the house edge is roughly 16.2%.
- Any Triple: With a 30:1 payout, the house edge is approximately 13.9%.
At 180:1 profit odds, a specified triple returns 181 units including the stake on its one winning result: 1 β 181/216 = 16.20% house edge. At 30:1, Any Triple returns 31 units with probability 1/36: 1 β 31/36 = 13.89%. Changing the payout changes the comparison.
Covering triples is not loss insurance
Any Triple wins on an event that makes common Big/Small bets lose. However, it adds another stake and loses on all non-triple results. The combined return depends on the amounts committed and which result occurs. It does not guarantee a profitable or break-even round.
For example, a non-triple total outside a chosen range can lose both that range bet and an Any Triple entry. Different winning conditions do not mean that every loss is covered. See Big and Small exclusions.
A one-in-36 event is not scheduled
A probability of 1/36 does not mean a triple must appear once in every 36 rolls. Independent rolls can produce consecutive triples or much longer gaps. Previous misses do not increase the next rollβs probability under the same fair-dice assumptions.
Variants and payout labels
Multiplier versions may change the base paytable and award additional returns in specified circumstances. A maximum boosted payout is not the payout received on every winning triple, so it cannot replace the full distribution in an RTP calculation.
Check whether a label states profit odds or a total return including the stake. β180 to 1β and β180 for 1β are different. Related guides cover Sic Bo payouts, Super Sic Bo and the main rules.
