Baccarat Rules and Variants for Canadian Readers

Baccarat compares two hands called Player and Banker. In the common punto banco format, card values and fixed drawing rules determine the final totals; participants do not choose whether either hand takes a third card. This guide links to the rules, payout differences and common claims explained throughout the section.

Card Values and the Third-Card Rule

Aces count as 1, cards 2–9 use face value, and tens and face cards count as 0. Only the final digit of the sum counts, so 7 + 8 produces a total of 5. A two-card total of 8 or 9 is a natural and stops further drawing in standard punto banco.

Read rules and table mechanics, the third-card rule and the Banker drawing table.

Payouts Depend on the Version

Traditional commission baccarat commonly deducts 5% from a winning Banker payout. No-commission versions replace that deduction with a different exception, such as a reduced payout or a push on a specified Banker result. Those versions should not be treated as identical.

See odds and house edge, commission comparisons and EZ Baccarat rules.

Variants and Presentation

A speed or squeeze label describes timing or reveal style; it does not by itself establish the payout. Historical player-banked forms differ from fixed-rule punto banco. Dragon Tiger uses a different two-card comparison and is not simply the same baccarat calculation.

The variants and side-bet guide links to these distinctions. Live dealer presentation and Lightning Baccarat need their own product-specific details.

Streaks and Betting Systems

Scoreboards record previous outcomes. They do not establish that a Banker, Player or Tie result is due. A lower house edge is still different from a positive expected return, and a staking sequence cannot guarantee recovery of losses.
