Taking and Laying Odds in Craps: Payouts and Expected Return

Taking and laying odds are additional wagers linked to an established line or Come point. At true-odds payouts, this component has zero mathematical house edge under a fair independent-dice model. That does not mean it cannot lose or that the required underlying wager has no house edge.

This guide separates the odds component from the underlying stake and explains why a lower combined percentage does not equal protection from losses.

What Does it Mean to Take Odds?

Taking Odds is a supplementary bet placed behind a “Pass Line” or “Come” bet after a point has been established (the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10). Because your initial Pass Line bet is a “contract” bet that stays until it wins or loses, the casino allows you to add more money to that wager once the point is set.

When you “Take Odds,” you are betting that the point number will be rolled again before a 7 appears. If the point hits, the house pays you at the true mathematical odds of that number appearing.

Payouts for Taking Odds

Because some numbers are harder to roll than others, the payouts are scaled to reflect the true probability:

  • Points 4 and 10: Pay 2 to 1.
  • Points 5 and 9: Pay 3 to 2.
  • Points 6 and 8: Pay 6 to 5.

For a point of 4, there are three dice combinations for 4 and six for 7. Ignoring intervening totals, the chance of 4 first is 3/9. A 2:1 profit payout therefore balances the two-thirds chance of losing: (1/3 Γ— 2) βˆ’ (2/3 Γ— 1) = 0.

The Inverse: Laying Odds

While Taking Odds is for those betting “with” the shooter, Laying Odds is the strategy used by “Don’t Pass” or “Don’t Come” players (often called “Dark Side” players). When you Lay Odds, you are betting that a 7 will be rolled before the point number.

Since it is mathematically more likely for a 7 to roll than any specific point number, you must “lay” more money than you stand to win. This is the opposite of Taking Odds, where you win more than you bet.

Payouts for Laying Odds

  • Points 4 and 10: You lay $2 for every $1 you want to win (1 to 2).
  • Points 5 and 9: You lay $3 for every $2 you want to win (2 to 3).
  • Points 6 and 8: You lay $6 for every $5 you want to win (5 to 6).

For a point of 4, 7 appears first with probability 6/9 under the same model. Laying two units for one unit of profit has expectation (2/3 Γ— 1) βˆ’ (1/3 Γ— 2) = 0. The greater win probability is balanced by the larger amount lost when the point appears first.

Understanding Table Multipliers

When you look at a Craps table, you will often see signs indicating “3x-4x-5x Odds” or “10x Odds.” This refers to how much money the casino allows you to place as an Odds bet relative to your original wager.

On a 5x taking-odds schedule, a $10 underlying stake permits up to $50 additional odds, subject to the rules. A 3x-4x-5x schedule permits $30 on 4/10, $40 on 5/9 and $50 on 6/8. Laying-odds limits may be expressed using different conventions, so they must be read separately.

The Denominator Changes

Suppose an underlying wager has a fixed expected dollar loss. Adding a mathematically neutral stake increases the amount used as the denominator for a combined house-edge percentage. The percentage falls, but the expected dollar loss of the underlying wager remains.

The additional stake also increases exposure on an actual roll sequence. A larger permitted multiplier is not a promise of smaller losses or enough funds to withstand a losing run. A higher profit ratio on 4 or 10 reflects a lower winning probability, not a unique advantage.

Odds Versus Standalone Buy and Lay Bets

Taking or laying odds behind an established wager is distinct from a standalone buy or lay wager with commission. The latter’s charge and settlement rules create a separate calculation. These names should not be used interchangeably.

Working Status and Records

A component may have a different working status from its underlying wager on a come-out roll. Physical chip placement and digital highlights identify the bet, but exact defaults and removal rules vary.
