Blackjack Rules and Variants for Canadian Readers
Blackjack compares a player’s hand with a dealer’s hand, with card totals above 21 normally losing. This guide explains hand values, common formats and rule differences for adult readers in Canada.

How to Play Blackjack: The Basics for Beginners
The following describes common rules. Dealing procedures, dealer actions and payouts vary between versions, so a generic explanation cannot replace the exact rules of a table.
- The Deal: The player usually starts with two cards. Some formats give the dealer a face-down hole card; others delay the dealer’s second card.
- Card Values: Numbered cards are worth their face value. Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10. Aces are flexible, counting as either 1 or 11.
- The Decision: On your turn, you must choose to Hit (take another card) or Stand (keep your current total).
- Special Moves: Depending on the variation, you may also be able to Double Down (double your bet for one additional card) or Split (turn a pair into two separate hands).
- The Showdown: After all players have finished, the dealer reveals their hole card. In most Canadian-facing games, the dealer must hit until they reach at least 17.
Common Blackjack Formats
These formats differ in dealing procedure, deck count or presentation. See the blackjack variants guide for related explanations.
Classic European Blackjack
In a common European no-hole-card format, the dealer receives the second card after players have acted. Settlement rules for additional stakes can differ when the dealer has blackjack.
Single Deck Blackjack
A single-deck format uses one deck, but its house edge also depends on payouts, dealer rules and available player actions. Deck count alone does not establish a return percentage. See the single-deck rule explanation.
Multi-Hand Blackjack
Multi-hand interfaces allow several hands against a dealer in the same round. The combined amount wagered matters: more hands do not guarantee a lower loss or a profitable result.
Live Dealer Blackjack
Live-dealer formats stream a physical table and accept decisions through an interface. Video presentation does not by itself establish different odds; the table rules remain the relevant basis for comparison.
Basic Strategy Depends on the Rules
Blackjack decisions can affect expected return, but a strategy chart assumes a particular rule set. Universal instructions such as “always double on 11” can be wrong for some dealer cards and rules. A chart is not a guarantee of profit, and this overview does not claim a universal house-edge percentage.
- Splitting rules: Limits on resplitting, drawing to split aces and doubling after a split affect the available decisions.
- Deck count: Strategy assumptions may differ across single-deck and multi-deck formats.
- Soft 17: Whether the dealer hits or stands on a soft 17 changes the rule set being analysed.
- Payouts and surrender: Blackjack payout ratios and surrender availability must be included in any mathematical comparison.
