Gambling Harm and Support in Canada

Gambling can affect money, relationships and wellbeing. You can seek help before a crisis, including when you are concerned about someone else. WinnerOnline is not a counselling service.

Finding help

In Ontario, ConnexOntario provides free, confidential information about gambling, addiction and mental-health treatment services, 24 hours a day. Call 1-866-531-2600. Its service is Ontario-focused; it is not a single national gambling helpline.

Outside Ontario, use your provincial or territorial health service to find local gambling support. The Responsible Gambling Council provides harm-prevention information. Check each organization’s service area and contact hours rather than assuming every organization offers a 24-hour counselling line.

Recognizing harm

  • Spending more money or time than intended.
  • Borrowing or missing essential bills because of gambling.
  • Trying to recover losses through more gambling.
  • Hiding gambling or experiencing conflict about it.
  • Gambling affecting sleep, work, study or relationships.

These are reasons to seek support, not a diagnosis. There is no need to wait for a particular amount of debt or harm.

Reducing access

Consider pausing gambling, protecting money for essentials and speaking with someone you trust. Ask your bank or support service about payment blocks and other barriers. Limits and blocking tools do not eliminate every risk.

Self-exclusion in Ontario

BetGuard is iGaming Ontario’s centralized tool for opting out of regulated online gambling in Ontario. Review its current scope and terms directly. It is not a Canada-wide exclusion from every website or physical venue.

iGaming Ontario’s BetGuard announcement confirms that its regulated online scope includes OLG. Physical-venue arrangements, including My PlayBreak, need separate checking. Do not assume all self-exclusion programs have identical coverage.

Information and emergencies

Understanding games does not remove risk. Gambling is not a reliable income source or a solution to debt. If there is an immediate danger to life, contact emergency services.
