Sic Bo Risk Comparisons: Probability, Payout and Exposure

Labels such as โ€œlow riskโ€ and โ€œhigh riskโ€ can hide three different questions: how often a bet wins, how large its return is and how much is committed. None of these alone establishes whether a session will profit. This page explains the distinctions behind common Sic Bo strategy claims.

Win frequency and house edge are different

Under the usual triple-exclusion rule, Big or Small wins on 105 of 216 fair independent dice outcomes, approximately 48.61%. At 1:1 profit odds its house edge is 2.78%. A two-number combination at 6:1 also has a 2.78% edge, but wins on only 30 of 216 outcomes, about 13.89%.

These bets therefore have the same expected loss per unit under those particular rules while producing different patterns of returns. Calling either a safe way to preserve a balance would go beyond the mathematics. See the full odds table.

One in 216 is not 216 to 1

A specified triple has a probability of 1/216. Its odds against occurring are 215:1, because there are 215 losing outcomes for one winning outcome. At 180:1 profit odds, its house edge is approximately 16.20%. Probability, odds against and the offered payout must not be interchanged.

A total of 4 or 17 has three ordered outcomes each, giving a probability of 3/216. Its expected return depends on the payout actually offered. A large maximum in a multiplier variant does not provide the full probability distribution needed for comparison.

Adding bets changes total exposure

A range bet plus a triple bet can still lose together on a non-triple total outside the selected range. The range bet cannot guarantee funding for the other entry. Each additional stake must be included when calculating the net result.

Adding more stakes generally raises the expected dollar loss when they have negative expectation. It does not necessarily raise the percentage house edge: the combined percentage is weighted by the stakes and their respective expected losses.

Past results do not select a favourable moment

For fair independent rolls, a streak does not change the next probabilities. A staking progression changes the amount exposed rather than the dice distribution. Small percentage stakes, stop conditions and a chosen session length do not establish guaranteed survival or recovery.
