Chemin de Fer and Baccarat Banque: How the Formats Differ
Chemin de fer and baccarat banque are player-banked forms of baccarat. They differ from the fixed-rule punto banco format commonly described simply as โbaccarat.โ This page explains the terminology without treating historical formats as evidence of current Canadian availability.
The Meaning of a Player-Banked Game
In punto banco, Player and Banker are names for two hands and the draw is governed by a fixed table. In a player-banked format, a participant takes the banking role against other participants. That changes who bears the opposing stakes and how the game is administered.
Chemin de Fer
Chemin de fer uses a banking role that can pass between participants. The opposing side is represented by a player hand, rather than every person receiving an independent baccarat hand. Some drawing choices differ from the automatic punto banco table; precise dealing, drawing and bank-transfer procedures belong to the governing rules.
Calling the game player-banked does not mean that it is free of charges or that every participant acts as banker each round. House deductions and the procedures for holding or passing the bank are separate parts of the rules.
Baccarat Banque and Two Tableaux
Baccarat banque is associated with the name baccarat ร deux tableaux: two opposing player hands, or tableaux, are settled against the bank. The banker may win against one tableau and lose against the other. This structure should not be confused with two independent punto banco games.
Terms such as limited bank and open bank concern the banking arrangement. They do not, by themselves, describe a standard online game feature or a promise that all stakes will be accepted.
Commissions Are Rules-Specific
A single commission rate cannot be applied to every traditional baccarat format. The game variant and venue rules determine the deductions and bank limits. For Canadian application, use the published rules of the specific venue or authorised service rather than importing a fee from another jurisdiction.
Why Punto Banco Figures Do Not Transfer Automatically
A house-edge percentage calculated for fixed-rule punto banco assumes its drawing table and payout structure. Player-banked arrangements, decisions and charges require their own analysis. The existence of a decision does not establish that a profitable strategy exists.
