Punto Banco Baccarat: Rules, Scoring and Payouts

Punto banco is a fixed-rule form of baccarat. Two hands, called Player and Banker, are compared; the people backing those hands do not choose whether they draw additional cards. This distinguishes the format from player-banked baccarat traditions.

Card Values and Final Totals

An ace is worth 1, cards 2–9 have their face values, and tens, jacks, queens and kings count as 0. Only the final digit of the sum is used. For example, 7 plus 8 produces a baccarat total of 5, while a queen plus 9 totals 9. The highest possible total is 9.

The Deal and Natural Hands

Each hand initially receives two cards. If either totals 8 or 9, that is a natural and both hands stand. The higher total wins; identical totals tie. A natural does not require a particular card combination, only the initial two-card total.

Without a natural, the Player draws on 0–5 and stands on 6 or 7. The Banker follows a conditional table that depends on its own total and whether the Player took a third card. See the complete third-card rules and Banker drawing table for the exceptions.

Main Bets and Commission

Under the conventional 5% commission model, a winning Banker stake earns 0.95:1 profit and a winning Player stake earns 1:1. A tied hand returns the Player and Banker stakes. The separate Tie bet has its own payout and is not paid merely because a main bet is returned.

For a standard eight-deck model, approximate house edges are 1.06% for Banker with 5% commission and 1.24% for Player. An 8:1 Tie payout gives approximately 14.36% house edge; a 9:1 Tie payout gives approximately 4.84%. The two Tie payouts cannot share the same house-edge figure.

Those percentages describe long-run mathematical expectations under specific rules, not a prediction or guarantee for one session. The baccarat odds guide explains why winning frequency and monetary return differ.

Rule Variants and Presentation

A commission-free version may change the settlement of particular Banker wins. Speed formats, live video and animated interfaces describe presentation and timing; they do not alone establish commission or return. Brand names and table labels should therefore be read alongside the actual rules.

What Result Histories Can Show

A roadmap or bead plate records previous results. A visible streak is not proof that it will continue or that the opposite result is due. In a physical shoe, cards are removed as play proceeds, but a simple win/loss pattern does not establish a profitable prediction.

Increasing a stake after a loss or following a fixed progression does not change the drawing rules or remove a negative expected return. Funds and table limits are finite; a system cannot guarantee recovery.

Canadian Context

This is an informational explanation, not a claim that WinnerOnline hosts games or verifies every table. A Canadian-facing label does not identify a game’s currency, provincial availability or exact rules. Those details remain specific to the product and jurisdiction.
