Baccarat Odds and House Edge: Payout Assumptions Explained
Baccarat probability describes how often a hand result occurs. House edge also accounts for what that result pays. A more frequent winning hand can still produce a negative expected return after payout rules are applied.
The figures below describe standard eight-deck punto banco with a 5% commission on Banker wins, even-money Player wins and main bets pushing on ties. Other versions require their own calculations.
Decoding the Baccarat House Edge
House edge is expected loss as a percentage of the original wager under the stated model. Approximate values for this configuration, with an 8:1 Tie payout, are:
- Banker Bet: 1.06%
- Player Bet: 1.24%
- Tie Bet: 14.36%
These are long-run averages, not guaranteed losses or refunds. A smaller percentage does not make a session profitable or protect the amount wagered.
Why the Banker Wins More Often
The fixed drawing tableau gives the Banker and Player different outcome distributions. The Banker acts after the Player procedure, but does not make an informed choice: the Banker’s draw is prescribed by its total and, where relevant, the Player’s third-card value.
Mathematically, in an eight-deck game, the Banker hand will win approximately 45.86% of the time, while the Player hand wins 44.62%. The remaining 9.52% of rounds result in a Tie. When you remove Tie results from the equation, the Banker wins about 50.68% of all resolved hands.
The Impact of Commission and Payouts
To balance the Banker’s natural advantage, casinos apply a 5% commission to winning Banker bets. This means a $100 bet on the Banker typically returns $95 in profit.
No-commission versions are not interchangeable. A half-profit payout on a Banker win with 6 produces a different expected return from EZ Baccarat’s push on a winning three-card Banker 7. The approximately 1.46% Banker edge associated with the former should not be assigned to both versions.
Eight-Deck Commission-Game Comparison
| Bet Type | Payout | House Edge | Hand-result probability |
| Banker | 1:1 (minus 5%) | 1.06% | 45.86% |
| Player | 1:1 | 1.24% | 44.62% |
| Tie (8:1) | 8:1 | 14.36% | 9.52% |
| Tie (9:1) | 9:1 | 4.84% | 9.52% |
The Tie probability is unchanged by changing its payout from 8:1 to 9:1. What changes is the expected return. A payout ratio is not the odds of that event occurring.
Calculating Expected Return
For the standard Banker bet, multiply the Banker-win probability by 0.95 and subtract the Player-win probability; a tie contributes zero net profit. For an 8:1 Tie bet, multiply the tie probability by 8 and subtract the probability of a non-tie. The negative of that expected net return is the house edge. Use unrounded probabilities for precise calculations.
Side Bets and Deck Count
Pair, margin-of-victory and other side bets have distinct qualifying events and paytables. A main-game percentage cannot be reused for them. Exact deck count matters to probabilities, as do any changed payout or drawing rules.
A published rate needs its configuration and source. WinnerOnline does not claim to have tested every game or to guarantee fairness or withdrawals.
