Blackjack Glossary: Hands, Actions and Payout Terms
This glossary defines common blackjack hand, action and payout terms. Individual variants can add exceptions, so a definition should be read with the applicable game rules.
WinnerOnline publishes explanations for Canadian readers and does not operate games or player accounts. The terms below describe mechanics, not a promise of winnings.
Basic Gameplay Terminology
These terms describe common events during a standard round.
- Action: The total amount of money a player bets over a specific period. It can also refer to whose turn it is to act at the table.
- Bankroll: The total amount of money a player has set aside specifically for gambling purposes.
- Bust: When a hand’s total exceeds 21. If the player busts, they lose their bet immediately; a dealer bust normally pays surviving player hands, subject to variant exceptions such as a dealer-22 push.
- Hit: To request another card from the dealer in an attempt to get closer to 21.
- Stand: To decline further cards and finish the hand with your current total.
- Push: A tie between the player and the dealer. The player’s original bet is returned with no profit or loss.
- Natural: Also known as a “Blackjack,” this is an ace and a ten-value card dealt as the first two cards. Its payout and treatment after splitting depend on the rules; 3:2 and 6:5 are different possible payouts.
Technical Terms and Table Features
These terms describe the physical or digital environment of the game and the rules governing the deck.
- Box: The area in front of each player where bets are placed and cards are dealt.
- Burn Card: The first card of a newly shuffled deck or shoe that is placed face-down in the discard pile by the dealer.
- Cut Card: A plastic card (usually brightly colored) used to signify when the deck needs to be reshuffled.
- Discard Tray: The plastic tray on the dealer’s right side that holds all cards that have already been played or “burned.”
- Shoe: A device used to hold multiple decks of cards, making it easier for the dealer to slide them out one by one.
- Upcard: The dealer’s card that is dealt face-up for all players to see.
- Hole Card: The dealer’s card that is dealt face-down, which can be checked or revealed under the game’s blackjack procedure. No-hole-card games deal the second dealer card later.
Player Options and Betting Strategies
Modern blackjack variants offer several ways to manipulate your wager after the initial cards are dealt.
- Double Down: A move where a player doubles their initial bet in exchange for receiving exactly one more card. Eligibility and restrictions depend on the rules.
- Split: If a player is dealt two cards of the same value, they can “split” them into two separate hands by placing a second bet equal to the first.
- Insurance: A side bet offered when the dealer’s upcard is an Ace. It pays 2:1 if the dealer has a natural blackjack, and is settled separately from the main hand. It does not insure every possible main-hand loss.
- Surrender: An option in some variants where a player can give up their hand and lose only half of their bet before the hand is completed.
- Flat Betting: A betting style where the player wagers the same amount on every hand, regardless of wins or losses.
Hand Values and Mathematical Terms
Understanding the math of the game requires knowing how different hands are categorized by the house.
- Hard Hand: Any hand that either does not contain an Ace or contains an Ace that must be counted as 1 to avoid busting. A hard hand is not necessarily weak: hard 20 and hard 12 have very different totals.
- Soft Hand: A hand containing an Ace that can be counted as 1 or 11 without exceeding 21. For example, an Ace and a 6 is a “Soft 17.”
- House Edge: Expected loss expressed as a percentage of a stated betting basis under specified rules and decision assumptions. It is not a prediction for one session.
- Basic Strategy: A model comparing expected returns of available actions under a specified rule set. It does not predict the next card or guarantee profit.
- Multi-Deck: A game played with more than one deck of cards (usually 6 or 8), which is common in both live and digital formats.
Advanced Concepts for the Keen Player
Additional terms describe table positions and settlement options.
- First Base: The betting position located to the immediate left of the dealer. This player is the first to receive cards and the first to act.
- Third Base (Anchor): The position to the dealer’s immediate right. This player is the last to act before the dealer reveals their hole card.
- Even Money: A variation of insurance. If a player has a natural blackjack and the dealer shows an Ace, the player can take an immediate 1:1 payout instead of risking a push if the dealer also has blackjack.
- Heads Up: Playing one-on-one against the dealer with no other players at the table.
