A hand is considered Soft<\/strong> if it contains an Ace that is being counted as 11 without the total exceeding 21. The term “soft” refers to the hand’s flexibility; because an Ace can also be counted as 1, you cannot bust by taking an additional card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Example:<\/strong> If you are dealt an Ace and a 6, you have a Soft 17<\/strong>. If you “Hit” and receive a 10, your Ace automatically converts to a value of 1, turning your hand into a Hard 17<\/strong>. If you draw any card higher than a 4, you bust. Similarly, if you have an Ace, a 5, and a 10, that is a Hard 16<\/strong>\u2014the Ace has already been “hardened” to a value of 1 to keep you under 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ace\u20132\u20134 is soft 17. Adding a 5 makes the ace count as 1 and produces hard 12. The total can therefore fall when the ace is revalued, even though a card has been added. The software is applying the scoring rule rather than removing a card\u2019s value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With several aces, at most one can count as 11 without exceeding 21. Ace\u2013Ace totals soft 12; adding a 9 produces soft 21. If another ten-value card follows, both aces count as 1 and the total is hard 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSoft\u201d does not mean safe from losing, and \u201chard\u201d does not mean a hand must be weak. Hard 20 and hard 12 are very different totals. A shortcut based only on the label omits the dealer upcard and the game\u2019s rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Basic-strategy comparisons depend on those conditions. A blanket rule covering every hard 12\u201316 or every soft double can contain errors. Doubling adds a stake; it does not make the extra money protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The dealer rule commonly specifies “Dealer Stands on All 17s” (S17)<\/strong> or “Dealer Hits Soft 17” (H17)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both total 21, but an initial two-card natural generally has distinct payout and priority rules. A 21 formed after splitting may also be treated differently. The game rules determine those details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not from its next single card while it is soft, because the ace can fall from 11 to 1. Once the hand becomes hard, a later card may cause a bust.
