Special variants can use different settlements. Knowing a term does not establish a winning method or the rules of a particular Canadian-facing game.

The Fundamentals: Core Game Terms

Before you dive into the colorful slang, you must master the technical terms that define the structure of the game. These are the words used by the software and players to describe the state of play.

Shooter: The person rolling dice at a conventional physical table. Some live products use mechanical equipment, while digital games generate outcomes through software; a remote user is not necessarily controlling a physical throw.

Come Out Roll: The first roll of a new round. This roll determines whether a “Point” is established or if the round ends immediately with a win or loss.

The Point: If the shooter rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 on the Come Out roll, that number becomes the “Point.” The objective then shifts to rolling that number again before a 7 appears.

On/Off: Can describe an individual wager’s working status. The main point puck instead identifies whether a table point is active; it does not establish the status of every wager.

Marker Puck: A plastic disk used to track the Point. One side says “Off” (black) and the other says “On” (white).

Popular Craps Slang and Nicknames

The culture of craps is built on colorful nicknames for numbers and outcomes. While you won’t always see these terms written in the game’s interface, you will hear them in live dealer chats and community forums.

Snake Eyes: Rolling a total of 2 (two 1s). It is a losing roll for Pass Line bettors on the Come Out.

Boxcars: Rolling a total of 12 (two 6s). Much like snake eyes, this is often a “crap” number.

Yo or Yo-leven: The number 11. Players say “Yo” to avoid confusion with the word “seven,” which sounds similar over the noise of a busy environment.

Natural: A total of 7 or 11 on the Come Out roll, resulting in an immediate win for the Pass Line.

Crap Out: To roll a 2, 3, or 12 on the Come Out roll.

Seven Out: When a shooter rolls a 7 after a Point has been established. This ends the round and results in a loss for Pass Line bettors.

Betting Specific Terminology

To navigate the betting layout of a gambling portal effectively, you need to know exactly what each section represents. The names of the bets are often the most confusing part for beginners.

Flat Bet: The initial wager made on the Pass Line or Don’t Pass Line before the Point is established.

Odds Bet: An additional wager linked to an established line or Come point. True-odds payouts give this component zero mathematical house edge under a fair-dice model, but it can lose and the underlying wager retains its expected loss.

Pressing a Bet: Increasing an existing stake. The term does not always mean doubling or funding the increase entirely from winnings.

Hardways: Betting that a number (4, 6, 8, or 10) will be rolled as a pair (e.g., two 4s for a Hard 8) before a 7 or an easy combination of that same total appears.

Easy Way: Rolling a 4, 6, 8, or 10 with any combination of dice that are not a pair (e.g., a 5 and 1 for an “Easy 6”).

Any Craps: A one-roll bet that the next roll will be a 2, 3, or 12.

The “Wrong” Side of the Table

“Right” and “wrong” are customary labels for different wagers, not judgments about a participant. Their first-roll rules must be distinguished from point-phase outcomes.

Wrong Bettor: A person backing Don’t Pass or Don’t Come. After the relevant point is established, the wager wins on 7 before that point; its first-roll settlements differ and include a barred total.

Right Bettor: A player betting with the shooter (on the Pass Line or Come).

Lay Bet: A standalone wager that 7 appears before a specified number, subject to commission rules. It is distinct from laying odds behind an established Don’t wager.

Cold Table: Informal description of earlier results, often frequent seven-outs. It does not predict the next independent roll.

Advanced Game Concepts

As you spend more time on gambling portals, you will encounter terms that describe the math and probability behind the game.

House Edge: Expected loss expressed relative to a stated stake and set of rules. Per-roll, per-initial-bet and per-resolved-bet calculations use different denominators.

Vigorish (Vig): A commission. Its rate, basis, rounding and collection timing must be identified; buy and lay charges need not be calculated on the same amount.

Betting System: A rule for combining or changing stakes. It does not alter fair independent-dice probabilities or guarantee recovery.

Action: The total amount of money a player has at risk on the table at any one time.

Accounting Terms

Profit excludes the returned original stake. Total return includes it. Turnover adds all stakes placed over time, while exposure describes money currently at risk. A component win can coexist with an overall loss across several simultaneous wagers.

Related Explanations

See craps rules, markers, dice probability, and spending records.
