This guide separates the come-out roll, the point phase and the major table areas. Layouts and dealing procedures can vary, and special variants such as crapless craps use different rules.

The Basic Objective of Craps

At its core, Craps is a game where players wager on the outcome of the roll of two six-sided dice. A single player, known as the “shooter,” rolls the dice, while the rest of the players at the table bet on the results. The game is played in rounds, and each round begins with a “Come-Out” roll. Depending on the numbers rolled, a “Point” may be established, shifting the game into its second phase.

Navigating the Craps Table Layout

A conventional full-size table repeats major betting areas at both ends. Smaller, live-streamed and digital versions may arrange them differently. A position’s size or location does not establish its probability or return.

The Pass Line and Don’t Pass Bar

Running along the outer edge of the table is the Pass Line. This is the most fundamental betting area. Most players place their chips here at the start of a round. Opposite to this is the Don’t Pass Bar, for a wager with different come-out settlements that, after a point is set, wins if 7 appears before that point.

The Field

The Field is a large area in the middle of each side. It is a one-roll bet that the next toss will be a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12. Payouts on 2 and 12 vary by ruleset and materially affect the return.

The Come and Don’t Come

Located just above the Field, these areas function similarly to the Pass Line but are used after a point has already been established. They allow players to start their own “sub-game” within the main round.

The Place Numbers

At the top of the layout, you will see the numbers 4, 5, SIX, 8, NINE, and 10. These boxes are where the dealers place your bets when you want to wager that a specific number will roll before a 7.

The Center (Proposition) Area

In the exact middle of the table is an area shared by both sides. This is controlled by the “Stickman.” It contains the high-payout, high-risk bets like the Hardways and the one-roll “Any Craps” or “Seven” bets.

The Two Phases of the Game

A round of Craps is divided into two distinct parts: the Come-Out Roll and the Point Phase.

Phase 1: The Come-Out Roll

The round starts with the shooter rolling the dice.

If a 7 or 11 is rolled: The Pass Line bets win immediately.

If a 2, 3, or 12 is rolled: This is “Craps.” The Pass Line bets lose.

If any other number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) is rolled: This number becomes the “Point.”

Phase 2: The Point

Once a Point is established, the dealer flips a puck to the “ON” side and places it on the corresponding number on the layout. The shooter continues to roll the dice until one of two things happens:

The Point is rolled again: The Pass Line bets win, and the shooter starts a new Come-Out roll.

A 7 is rolled: This is known as “Sevening Out.” The Pass Line bets lose, the round ends, and the dice are passed to the next shooter.

The Role of the Table Crew

A conventional physical table may use the following crew roles. Staffing and responsibilities vary, especially on smaller or live-streamed tables:

The Boxman: Sits in the middle, supervises the game, and handles the cash and chips.

The Dealers: Dealers manage stakes and settlements on their assigned areas. Placement procedures depend on the bet and house rules.

The Stickman: Stands opposite the Boxman, controls the dice with a long wooden stick, and calls out the results of each roll.

Essential Etiquette and Rules

To ensure a smooth experience, players should follow standard table protocols.

Hands off the table: Once the shooter has the dice, you should never have your hands over the layout.

Dice on the table: The shooter must always keep the dice in plain sight of the crew and must hit the back wall of the table when throwing.

Late bets: Try to place your bets while the dice are still in the middle of the table. Shouting a bet as the shooter is about to throw is generally discouraged.

Don’t Pass and the Barred Total

Under common bar-12 rules, Don’t Pass wins on a come-out 2 or 3, loses on 7 or 11 and pushes on 12. Some rules bar 2 instead. After a point is established, it wins when 7 appears before the point and loses when the point appears first. The marked barred total must be identified.

Layout Position Does Not Mean Safety

No table area is a safe zone. A zero-house-edge odds component can still lose and requires an underlying wager with its own rules. A large Field area or a centre-table position also does not, by itself, establish the payout or house edge.

Related Rules and Definitions

See the come-out roll explanation, table layout guide, bets and odds overview and craps glossary.
